What is Natural Stone?

There are many different stone types and metal finishes available for use in modern design. Despite the availability of synthetic and artificial solutions, a move toward nature is currently apparent. Consumers of today value the whole, the genuine, and the unprocessed.

Yes, we are discussing natural stone. How about natural stone, though? What traits best describe it? Now let's talk.

What is Natural Stone?

Natural stone isn't manufactured, as the name suggests. Instead, it comes from materials that have been mined from the soil. These materials have been employed as construction foundations and ornamental features for countless years. Whether the finished product is a natural stone tile or natural stone flooring, this is true.

Each type and variant of stone is the result of mineral compositions and geological processes that have been taking place for eons. There are three primary rock types, each forged by physical changes, whether melting, eroding, cooling, compacting, or deforming:

1. Sedimentary - These rocks are created from fragments of organic stuff that was once present. Three categories of sedimentary rocks exist: classic, organic, and chemical. For instance, chemical precipitation is how limestone is created.

2. Metamorphic rock: These rocks have changed from their original state as a result of extreme pressure or prolonged heat. Metamorphic rocks can be divided into two categories: foliated and non-foliated. For instance, marble is not foliated, whereas granite has foliation.

3. Igneous rock - These rocks are created by a process of rapid heating and cooling.

Natural volcanic igneous rocks include granite, diorite, and obsidian.

What Are Types of Natural Stones?

Currently, there are several different types of natural stone available. Each one has its own unique properties that differentiate it from the others. Varying qualities include color, texture, absorption, luminosity, veining, porousness, and grade.

Common natural stone types are:

Marble

Marble, arguably the most well-known and expensive natural stone, has long been linked to a traditional and fashionable aesthetic.

This delicate and lovely stone has long been the preferred choice for sculpture and architecture, and it is frequently used in Italian and Roman designs.

A marble tile will make a stone floor or kitchen countertop more sophisticated and elegant.

The only drawbacks are that it is pricey and prone to deterioration and staining.

Granite

Granite is a common cast stone material and one of the most widely-used natural igneous stones in use today. Because of its extreme toughness and durability, little to no maintenance is necessary. It is perfect for homeowners to use in all rooms of their home, particularly the kitchen, because to its mix of lovely aesthetics and simplicity of use.

Limestone

Limestone, one of the market's most varied stones, strikes a balance between toughness and aesthetic appeal, making it the ideal natural stone for both indoor and outdoor projects. White limestones are sedimentary rocks (or almost white). It can have various hues and textures because to impurities like sand or iron oxide.

Travertine

A type of limestone, travertine is a sedimentary rock that’s often mixed with calcite to give it the unique swirls and movement associated with its distinctive character. It has a soft touch and fibrous appearance, which makes it ideal for floors and bathroom countertops.

Quartzite

This natural stone has become quite popular in modern interior design. It’s one of the hardest and most durable stones, which helps it resist stains and wear and tear. This makes it optimal for kitchen countertops.
