Negro Santiago ZS Gneiss

A typical and widespread variety of metamorphic rock is gneiss. It is created by igneous or sedimentary rock formations being subjected to high-temperature and high-pressure metamorphic processes. Schist forms at lower pressures and temperatures than gneiss. Gneiss almost always exhibits a banded texture with alternating lighter and darker colored bands and lacks a clear cleavage.
In the old crust of continental shields, gneisses are typical. Gneisses, such as the Acasta Gneiss, make up some of the planet's oldest rocks.

Negro Santiago ZS Gneiss

A gneiss is mostly composed of quartz and feldspar, with varying proportions of mica, amphibole, and pyroxene. It is textured in bands. Granite and other quartz- and feldspar-rich igneous rocks, as well as sand- and gravel-rich sediments like arkose, are metamorphosed into gneisses.

What's te difference between Gneiss and Granite?

The primary distinction between gneiss and granite is that the former is an igneous rock type, whilst the latter is a type of metamorphic rock.

Rocks are solid masses or assemblages of minerals that form spontaneously. Sedimentary rocks, igneous rocks, and metamorphic rocks are the three main categories of rocks. These three categories differ from one another in terms of both appearance and chemical make-up.

Gneiss is a frequent and widely dispersed type of rock that develops from prior formations that were either igneous or sedimentary rocks in the beginning. Although gneissic rocks typically have medium to coarse foliation and a high degree of recrystallization, they do not include significant amounts of mica, chlorite, or other platy minerals. Granite gneisses, diorite gneisses, etc. are examples of gneisses that are metamorphosed igneous rocks or its equivalent.

They may also go by other names, such as garnet gneiss, biotite gneiss, albite gneiss, etc., depending on their mineral composition. A gneiss generated from an igneous rock is referred to as an orthogneiss, and one from a sedimentary rock as a paragneiss. Rocks that resemble gneiss in their characteristics are referred to as gneissose.

Schist and gneiss are similar, however the minerals in gneiss are organized in bands. Because some gneiss looks to have more mica than it actually does, it can occasionally be challenging to distinguish between gneiss and schist. This is especially true for separation planes rich in mica.
